New Claremorris Boxing Club gym to be officially opened
THE Minister of State for Regional Economic Development at the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and the Gaeltacht Affairs Michael Ring will officially open the new gym for Claremorris Boxing club on Sunday.
He stated: “I am delighted to be able to officially open the new gym for Claremorris Boxing Club on Sunday next. Claremorris Boxing Club will be 55 years in operation in February 2017 so it is fitting that their facilities are being enhanced at this time.
“The Sports Capital Programme of my previous Department provides funding to voluntary, sporting and community organisations for the provision of sports and recreational facilities. In Mayo a total of €9.3 million was allocated to 100 projects since 2011.
“Claremorris Boxing Club received a total of €8,000 under the 2014 round of the Programme towards the provision of gym equipment for the club. In addition to that funding a further €25,000 was distributed through the Irish Amateur Boxing Association.
“The sport of boxing has been to the forefront in Ireland for a long time and, considering the small population we have, Irish boxers have achieved great success over the years. If we are to continue to box at world class levels, it is very important that local boxing clubs such as Claremorris are invested in.
“It is clubs like these that grow and develop our young boxers into the world class athletes that we are all so used to seeing. Clubs don't develop and run successfully without the great support and work of the volunteers”.
