Death of renowned priest and Mayo GAA giant
ONE of Mayo's best known priests, Fr. Leo Morahan, has passed away.
Fr. Leo, as he was affectionately known, was a native of the Louisburgh area.
He served for many years as chairman of Mayo GAA board.
As well as gaelic football, Fr. Leo was hugely active in Irish language circles and was well known for his writings in both Irish and English.
He was a founding editor of the Louisburgh based An Coinneal magazine.
Throughout his ministry as a priest, Fr. Leo was based in a number of parishes in the Archdiocese of Galway.
Fr. Leo passed away at his home in Main Street, Louisburgh, on Christmas Day.
Son of the late Bridget (née Ball) and Seán T., he was predeceased by his sisters, Clem Lyons and Dr. Evangeline Smiddy, brothers Fr. Al, Jack, Oliver P., Jarlath, Basil and Willie.
He is survived by his sister Gaelie McManamin (Tralee), brother Justin (Dublin), sisters-in-law, Catherine, Mary, Beryl, Anne, and Margaret, nephews, nieces, grand nephews and nieces, great-grand nephews and nieces, the Kenny Family, cousins, brother priests, and a large circle of friends, to whom sympathy is tendered.
Fr. Leo will lie in repose at the Morahan Family Home at Main Street, Louisburgh, tomorrow (Tuesday) from 2 p.m. with removal at 7 p.m., walking to St. Patrick's Church.
Concelebrated Requiem Mass of Christian burial takes place on Wednesday at 1 p.m., followed by Prayers of Committal at Kilgeever Cemetery.
