Westport mourns late soccer captain
WESTPORT is mourning the passing today of John Fahy, a former club captain of Westport United.
John, who had been battling illness, would have celebrated his 46th birthday next month.
John was a fine, all round sportsman. He played for both Westport United and Westport GAA clubs but he was also an accomplished runner and an active athlete until he became ill last year.
He was brought up on Peter Street, next door to his great friend Sean Mulroy, who passed away earlier this month.
A tribute has been posted to John on the Westport United Facebook this afternoon.
It recalls how John honed his footballing talents on Peter Street and later put them into practice with Westport United Youths back in the 1980s.
Living in London for a few years, he developed a strong support for Brentford FC. He came back to Westport in 1992 and in the autumn of that year, donned the red and black when Westport United were in the Connaught Senior League, and it was the beginning of a footballing journey with the club.
An all round clubman, he wore the club's heart on his sleeve and was immensely passionate about its achievements on and off the pitch.
