Ten out of ten for Mayo girls
NEWBRIDGE made the long journey west in the hope of being the first club to take a scalp at Mayo Volleyball Club's impeccable league record. With nine wins out of nine games, there had been much talk of Mayo attaining their milestone of 10 in a row.
The Mayo girls remained steadfast and focused to see out the game and make it an historic 10 wins on the bounce
They bombarded the Newbridge defence with a multitude of hitting and despite some brave defending, Mayo won the set 25-10.
A resolute Mayo side maintained their offensive assault on the visitors in the second set, showing their determination to win it out.
In the third set the Mayo side emptied the bench. Each player displayed unflinching eagerness to win the game as Mayo's attack was eclipsed only by the impressive defending of Orla Casby of Knock and Gillian Doherty of Kiltimagh.
Despite a late fightback, Mayo won the set 25-14 and the match 3-0. This result brings Mayo's winning streak to 10 matches and they have yet to encounter defeat.
A delighted Mayo captain, Mikal O'Boyle, said afterwards: “After racking up a number of victories we were all very determined to extend our winning streak to 10 in a row. We all gelled together very well and that cohesion was shown in the performance.”
