Plan to hold public protest over axing of Mayo GMIT campus courses
THE former independent elected representative who successfuly campaigned for a third-level facility in Castlebar in 1994 has welcomed the establishment of the 'Save Castlebar GMIT' initiative.
Paddy McGuinness made his remarks after learning of the move shortly after the bombshell announcement on Monday evening that five courses are to be scapped at the facility.
He said: “I encourage everybody to show support for our college, for which the people of Mayo fought so hard. Make no mistake. It is under threat.”
The 'Save Castlebar GMIT' initiative is the brainchild of former student Mairtin Pamela Corcorain.
He is proposing to hold a march through the streets of the town to show strong opposition to the axing of courses.
“We have no choice but to speak up. The GMIT is a massive part of our economy.”
He stated it is proposing to invite past pupils to make a stand while members of the students union and the public will be asked join them.
Former town councillor Harry Barrett has pledged his support. “The cutting of the courses is a shocking decision.”
Local businessman Eoin Heverin said if the courses are scrapped without any opposition, it will only be a matter of time before the facility is shut down.
