Striking Westport workers hold banner outside Mayo County Council meeting
FORMER employees of Tim Hastings Garage, Westport, are this afternoon holding a banner outside the offices of Mayo County Council, where a statutory meeting of the authority is underway, to draw further public attention to their campaign for redundancy payments.
Paul Durcan and Johnny McDonnell spoke to a number of elected representatives as they arrived for the meeting.
Ballina independent Councillor Gerry Ginty (pictured) made a point of wishing the workers well, adding he supported them in their efforts.
The workers were invited into the cocunil chamber and Westport independent Councillor Christy Hyland raised the matter. He and other elected members agreed that the dispute needed to be resolved.
The Westport workers are buoyed following the success of their rally and public meeting in the town on Saturday which was attended by SIPTU president Jack O'Connor.
They told The Connaught Telegraph they wished to thank all the members of the public for their ongoing support.
“We have been treated very badly and we will continue to strike until a Labour Court recommendation in relation to redundancies imposed on the company is implemented,” they added.
