Shock as Irwin is let go from Mayo senior GAA squad

THERE is widespread shock among Mayo GAA supporters this evening following the news that Liam Irwin has been let go from the Mayo senior panel.

The talented Breaffy clubman is among a number of players dropped from the county senior panel in the last number of days by the team management, according to informed sources.

Irwin, who starred for the county Under 21 team which captured the All-Ireland title last year, was seen as a future star and a player who many felt would be the answer to Mayo's goalscoring problems.

However, Irwin, who had been in the 26 Mayo match day squad for their national leagues games this year, including the game against Cavan last Sunday, has been dropped without featuring in any of the matches.

Meanwhile, for Mayo's crucial game against Tyrone in Omagh next Sunday, neither Seamus or Aidan O'Shea will start despite hopes to the contrary.

Indeed, in Seamus's case, he is expected to play for his club, Breaffy, in the Michael Walsh League on Sunday morning.

Mayo need to win one of their remaining two league games to ensure their top flight survival.
