Will Mayo GAA accept move to reduce a minute's silence to 20 seconds?
THE one minute pre-match tribute to deceased members and friends of the GAA is now in danger of been scrapped and replaced by just 20 seconds as a result of a Central Council directive.
The GAA history books tell us that there was always a tradition to observe a minute's silence for those who contributed hugely to the GAA during their lives.
However, following this new ruling by Croke Park this small acknowledgement, one minute silence, for great GAA people who have gone to their eternal reward is going to be cut by 40 seconds.
This strange and extraordinary move by the GAA top brass is bound to meet with lots of disgruntled GAA people from all around the country when the different county boards try to impliment this new ruling.
Already Westmeath County Board delegates have given the thumbs down to the new ruling.
Indeed, at their recent county board meeting there was a lot of annoyance expressed by different delegates with even the suggestion of changing the great tradition of a one-minute silence. In the end the overall view of the delegates was to reject the Croke Park ruling.
It is going to be interesting to see what the Mayo County Board delegate have to say regarding this ruling and whether they endorse or reject Croke Park directive.
The next Mayo County Board meeting is due to be held in the Michael Davitt Museum, Straide, on Monday night next, April 3, at 8 p.m., where a history of the Mayo GAA will be formally handed over to be the museum.
