Man critical after apartment fire

AN elderly man is recovering in Mayo University Hospital following an oubreak of fire in an apartment at Lucan Street, Castlebar, this afternoon (Saturday).

The victim, who suffered from smoke inhalation, is understood to be in a serious condition.

A number of rescue appliances, including two fire tenders and two ambulances, as well as gardaí attended the scene after the alarm was raised in the afternoon.
