Pensioner dies following Castlebar apartment fire

A MAN died at the weekend following a fire in his apartment in Castlebar.

He has been named locally as Joe Kelly, a pensioner in his early seventies.

Fire-fighting units and an ambulance rushed to the scene of the outbreak on Saturday afternoon after smoke was spotted coming from Mr. Kelly's apartment at Lucan Street in the town.

It is understood the victim was alive when taken from the building but died a short time later in Mayo University Hospital.
