Woman who died in Mayo tragedy is named
THE woman who died after being struck by a train at an unmanned level crossing at Straide yesterday has been named as local woman Bridie McHale.
The deceased, aged 70, was chasing her sheepdog when the accident occurred at around 11.30 a.m. yesterday.
The 17 passengers travelling on the two-carriage train from Manulla junction to Ballina were uninjured.
The victim's body was removed to Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem examination was carried out.
Gardai and Irish Rail are investigating the incident.
Local councillor Michael Kilcoyne said Mrs. McHale has a large and highly-regarded family and the tragedy has rocked a closely-knit community.
The funeral arrangements wil be announced later.
