Three in court on garda assault charges
THREE young men were remanded in custody today (Monday) when they appeared before a special district court sitting charged with assaulting a uniformed garda officer.
The assault on the male garda, who was accompanied by a female officer, is alleged to have occurred at Station Road, Claremorris, in the early hours of yesterday (Easter Sunday) morning.
Both gardaí received medical treatment at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar. They have now been released from hospital.
Three young men arrested following the incident appeared before Judge Mary Devins at a special court sitting in Ballina today (Monday) charged with assault causing harm under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.
The accused are Krits Kiepis (18), Grattan Close, Claremorris, Karolis Astruskzs (21), Chapel Court, Claremorris, and Elvis Vitolins (22), Chapel Court, Claremorris.
All three were remanded in custody on the application of Supt. Joe Doherty for consideration by the DPP, with the possibility of further, more serious charges to be considered.
They will appear before Harristown Court (Castlerea Prison) on Friday morning.
