Shock as plans for major Mayo housing development are shot down

PLANS for a multi-million-euro new housing development in Castlebar – the first in many years – have been shot down by Mayo County Council.

Long established construction firm Martin Moran Builders Limited lodged a planning application for 64 houses at The Curragh.

But planners said 'No' to the proposal.

The reasons outlined for refusal include the fact that the site, at Humbert Way (off the N5 link road), is located in an area zoned open space/amenity in the Castlebar and Environs Development Plan (2008/2014).

Another reason given for refusal is the fact that part of the site is located in an area deemed to be at risk of flooding.

Planners also say the proposed development is 'poorly designed' and 'would seriously injure the amenities of existing dwellings in the vicinity or depreciate the value of property in the area'.

Some councillors have criticised the Moran refusal and other negative recent decisions as regards planning applications.

However, John Condon, senior executive officer, told the meeting he is familiar with each of the applications which have been refused.

He said that in an overall context, applications are only refused where is no other option.

Mr. Condon added that Mayo has one of the lowest refusal rates in the country.
