So what's up next for Mayo in 2017 championship series?

FOLLOWING today's defeat by Galway in the Connaught senior football championship semi-final for the second year running, Mayo go now go into the All-Ireland qualifiers.

However, unlike last year when Mayo had three relatively easy games against lower grade teams enroute to getting to the All-Ireland quarterfinals, this will not be the case this time around as they could face some very tough games if they hope to get back on track and make the last eight.

For the qualifiers Mayo will be placed in section A. Their first game, 2A of the qualifiers, will take place on Saturday, July 1, when they will meet either Wexford or Derry, Louth or Longford, Wicklow or Laois, Sligo or Antrim.

It is also worth noting that if Mayo aren't drawn at home the faithful Green and Red supporters could face a very long journey to the likes of Derry, Wexford, Louth, Antrim or Wicklow for their next game.

Assuming Mayo get over this first hurdle they will qualify for round 3A of the qualifiers. These games will be played a week later, Saturday, July 8, when Mayo could be drawn against the likes of Tyrone or Donegal, Kerry or Clare, Meath or Kildare, Sligo or Antrim.

If Mayo win their two first qualifiers they will meet either of the Connaught or Munster runners-up.

This could see them play the likes of Cork or Tipperary. This round, 4A of the qualifiers, will be played on Saturday, July 22.

Meanwhile, the Mayo senior, intermediate and junior club championships are expected to go ahead next weekend. With round 1A of the qualifiers also taking place next weekend where Mayo will be drawn against one of the four winners two week's later, there seems no reason for the club championships to be called off.
