New Mayo Revenue Sheriff appointed
CASTLEBAR born solicitor John O'Malley (41) has been appointed Revenue Sheriff for Mayo.
He replaces the long serving Charles J. Kelly from Swinford.
John O'Malley, who qualified as a solicitor in 2002, is son of George and Laura O'Malley, Mountain View.
He is married to EibhlÃn (nee McLoughlin) from Achill. They have one child, Kate (2), and they live in Dublin.
Since 2015, Mr. O'Malley has held a top position with the AvantCard credit company in Carrick-on-Shannon.
He told The Connaught Telegraph he now plans to move the family to Castlebar and set up a legal practice here.
Of his new role, Mr. O'Malley says: “It's going to be an interesting challenge.
“It is a privilege to be appointed to this position by the Cabinet.â€
The Public Appointments Commission held interviews for the vacant position and the names of three people - regarded as the 'top' contenders - were sent to the government for consideration.
The role of Revenue Sheriff is an important and demanding position.
There are 16 in total in the Republic at the moment.Â
Their workload has greatly increased in the past decade as repossessions of both houses and belongings mounted due to deepening recession.
