The dangerous stretch of road approaching Ardboley junction in Balla

Head of TII to review Ardboley ruling

THE ongoing row of a dangerous Mayo roadway has taken a welcome twist.

Mayo Fine Gael Michelle Mulherin said she is determined to see traffic calming measures introduced at Ardboley junction.

She stated: “I have been in contact with Pat Maher, head of Network Management at Transport Infrastructure Ireland (formerly the National Roads Authority) asking that he strongly consider the implementation of speed limit reduction and traffic calming measures near Ardboley.

“Mr. Maher has now agreed to review the case.â€

Senator Mulherin said she is very concerned that there is a serious road safety risk on this section of road as things stand.

'I was at the junction at Balla recently and witnessed how inappropriate that part of the N60 is for high speed.

“I believe it is only a matter of time before someone is maimed or killed. Just before the Ardboley junction on the Claremorris side is a severe bend.

“People living in the area have expressed their concerns to me and I believe their concerns are rightly justified.

“It is very challenging for motorists to safely exit Ardboley taking a right turn onto the N60 heading towards Claremorris. The bend is a relatively short distance away and impedes the view of oncoming traffic.

“Balla is home to a thriving mushroom business which causes a lot of traffic from Heavy Good Vehicles. Also when the Tuam by pass opens and the expected date is September 2017 it is expected that there will be increased traffic as many from the Castlebar area may opt to use the N17 to travel to Galway instead of via Ballinrobe.

“I have been in contact with Pat Maher, head of Network Management at Transport Infrastructure Ireland (formerly the National Roads Authority) asking that he strongly consider the implementation of speed limit reduction and traffic calming measures near Ardboley.

“Mr. Maher has now agreed to review the case,†she added.
