Major refurbishment works imminent at Mayo garda base
EXTENSIVE refurbishment works are to begin later this month at Castlebar Garda Station.
The modernisation of the entrance area - starting on August 21 - will continue for three months.
The building programme, costing several hundred thousand euro, will be focused on the entrance area.
Explained Supt. Joe McKenna, head of the Castlebar Garda District: 'The modernisation project will make the garda station more accessible to the public and user friendly for people with disabilities.
'Electronic doors will be installed as part of the refurbishment.
'A portakabin will be on site at the front of the garda station for use as a remporary reception area while the works are being carried out.
'The new foyer will make the station more public friendly and will provide easier access for people with disabilities.'
The new Castlebar Garda Station was built in 1995.
This is the first major works carried out at the base in the 22-year intervening period.
