Death of widely popular Westport journalist and true Covey
THE funeral arrangements have been announced for Martin (Marty) Curry, James Street, Westport.
A retired journalist who had been attached all his working life to the staff of The Mayo News, his passing has evoked an immense sense of loss within the profession as well as the community in general.
Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Kay, son David, daughters Karina, Sharon, Clodagh, Orla and Martine, brothers John, Kevin, Ray and Ger, sister Marianne, grandchildren Cúlann, Aoibhe, Caoilte, Siofra, Laragh, Ciana, Mason, Finn and Jade, sons-in-law Kevin and Joe, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives neighbours and friends.
Marty was a familiar face at meetings of Mayo County Council, Westport Town Council and Castlebar Town Council as he reported the affairs of the three local authorities with great accuracy and efficiency.
His working colleagues immensely enjoyed his company on the press bench. Not only was he a tremendous storyteller, but he always had a bag of sweets with him which he generously shared with his fellow reporters.
He covered Westport United's success for many years and his knowledge of his home town and the families living in it was legendary.
Marty was, in every respect, a true Covey and, along with his good friend Liamy McNally, set up the annual Westport Covies Week.
He had a long association with St. Patrick's Drama, Westport, both as an actor and director/producer, and particularly enjoyed his time as a presenter on Westport Community Radio, where he had a big listnership.
The deceased was also actively involved with the FCA and made many friends through the organisation.
His remains will be reposing in Navin's Funeral Home, Westport, tomorrow (Monday) from 4 to 7 p.m.
Requiem Mass takes place in St. Mary's Church on Tuesday at 12.30 p.m. with burial afterwards in Aughavale Cemetery.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.
