Street lighting outage at Castlebar estate
RESIDENTS of a Castlebar housing estate have had to manage without street lighting for a number of months.
They have made representations to Mayo County Council on the issue.
One local woman who lives in the affected area - Garryduff Drive – says the situation is 'extremely dangerous'.
“With the darker evenings coming on, I feel there's an accident waiting to happen,” the woman said.
When contacted Councillor Michael Kilcoyne stated: “It's unacceptable that almost an entire estate be left without lights, especially with so many barriers (put in place by construction teams) about.
“Winter is fast approaching. I am demanding that the problem be dealt with immediately.”
Councillor Kilcoyne said he had been unable to ascertain exactly what caused the outage.
“One explanation I was given was that the cabling failed because it is so old,” he said. “Nobody knows for sure. I was given an assurance by Mayo County Council that 'a temporary arrangement' would be put in place but so far this hasn't happened.”
Others to report to Mayo County Council that the lights at Garryduff had gone on the blink include local community activist Donal Geraghty.
