Passing of affable Castlebar personality
THE death has occurred of Gerard Ruane, formerly of 20 Marian Row, Castlebar.
A member of a popular and respected family, news of his passing came as a shock to the community at large.
In his youth the deceased was an accomplished boxer and he represented Castlebar Boxing Club at county and provincial level.
Tributes were paid to him by officers of the club at yesterday's official opening of the organisation's new gymnasium at Lough Lanngh Holiday Village.
Myles Cresham, chairman, said everybody associated with the club was saddened to learn of Ger's passing. He had been held in very high regard during his time with the club.
“Our sympathy is extended to the Ruane family on their immense loss,” he added.
A son of the late Tom and Florrie Ruane, the deceased had been a great fan of Muhammad Ali and he also closely followed the fortures of the Mayo senior Gaelic football team throughout his life.
Deepest sympathy is extended to his brothers Micheál (Boston) and Joseph (Tyrone), sisters Monica Gillan (Ballina) and Bernadette Campbell (Breaffy), extended family, relatives and friends.
His remains will be reposing at Kilcoyne’s Funeral Home, Thomas Street, Castlebar, this evening (Sunday) from 5.30 p,m. with removal at 7 p.m. to the Church of the Holy Rosary, arriving at 7.30 p.m.
Burial takes place in the New Cemerery after 11 a.m. Mass tomorrow.
