Patricia and Brendan Henaghan

End of an era for Castlebar business

THE end of an era is being marked today at Ellison Street in Castlebar.

Henaghan's Health Food Centre will close its doors for the final time this evening.

Brendan and Patricia Henaghan have thanked all their customers for their loyal support over the past 37 years of trading. Gratitude is also extended to their neighbours and friends.

The health food business was first established in 1980 by Brendan's parents, John and Carmel, in a premises on the opposite side of the street to where John ran a successful pharmacy from 1958 to 1987.

The Henaghan family connection with Ellison Street goes back as far as 1927 when Brendan's grandparents, Dr. Brendan and Marjorie Henaghan, ran a GP practice in a building now occupied by McGuire Shoes. They had a family of three, John, Joyce and Denise.

Speaking to The Connaught Telegraph this morning, Brendan said it was an emotional day for him and his family.

“We are leaving with fond memories of Ellison Street and the town centre. It was a lovely place to work and it was great to meet so many fine people and make so many friends. Thanks to all those who dropped in to wish us the best in the future. We are very grateful,” he stated.

A new retail business is due to open in the premises shortly.
