Murrisk residents stage protest over water supply quality
RESIDENTS of Murrisk staged a protest outside a meeting of West Mayo Municipal District in the local community centre this afternoon over the condition of the water supply in the village.
According to a statement issued by the local national school, the water supply to the school comes from a stream which flows down from Croagh Patrick.
It continued: “Due to heavy rain or in freezing conditions, our water supply is (all too often) cut off. It’s then the job of an unfortunate volunteer to climb up to the network of water pipes and wade through the stream to try to find the school’s pipe, in order to reconnect it.
“As you can probably imagine, it’s a messy, cold job. Due to the presence of e-coli, naturally occurring arsenic, the water must then pass through an expensive filtering system before it is fit for human consumption.
“It’s crazy to think that, in 2017, this is the best we can hope for our school.”
Westport Independent Councillor Christy Hyland said the situation is embarrassing and needs to be immediately addressed.
“We have let the council officials know exactly how we feel about this situation. It cannot be tolerated any longer.”
