Mayo TD hitting the roof over campus leaks
EDUCATION Minister Richard Bruton has declined to give a clear indication when the leaking roof at the Mayo GMIT Campus in Castlebar will be repaired,
He was questioned by Castlebar-based TD Lisa Chambers on the matter in light of the recent announcement of €257 million for capital spending in the higher education sector over the next three years.
Deputy Chambers said the issue is of huge concern to students and staff at the centre as well as vistors.
A net has been installed to prevent root tiles from falling on members of the public. The roof simply cannot be left in the poor condition that it is.
In his response, Minister Brution said the Castlebar campus has a very important role to play in delivering economic growth and job creation.
“It's importance is recognised by the department, the Higher Education Authority and GMIT. For that reason, I established the GMIT Working Group in March 2017 with then Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
“The working group has been engaging with all the relevant stakeholders in order to formulate a plan for the sustainable future of the facility.
“The report of the working group is being finalised and is due to be submitted to my department shortly for consideration. I understand this report will also include a recommendation in relation to infrastructure issues, which my department will consider.”
