Mary Madec

Bosom Pals - breast cancer poetry anthology

BOSOM Pals, a collection of poems from breast cancer survivors, will launch at Ballyhaunis Library, Clare Street, on Thursday, December 14, at 12 noon.

It will feature poet Mary Madec, born and raised in Mayo, Ballinrobe-based writer Mari Maxwell, and poet Lorna Shaughnessy of Galway.

The collection is edited by Spiddal writer Marie Cadden who was inspired to pull the collection together after realising many Galway writers she knew had experiences with breast cancer.

Eight poets later, Bosom Pals first launched in Galway in October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Mayo residents will now experience its second.

The poems and artwork, collectively known as Damage Limitation, are scheduled for display at the Lambe Institute for Translational Research and HRB Clinical Research Facility at University Hospital Galway.

Bosom Pals features work from breast cancer survivors Marie Cadden, Robyn Rowland, Lorna Shaughnessy, Marion Cox, Susan Lindsay, Mary Hanlon, Mari Maxwell and Mary Madec. Artwork is by Ruth Cadden. All contributors have donated their talents, as has publisher Doire Press of Inverin, and CL Print of Casla.

All proceeds benefit Breast Cancer Research, Galway. To order, or for more information on breast cancer research, check out www.breastcancerresearch.ie.
