Emergency services called to two separate traffic accidents on Mayo roads

A MOTORIST has been taken by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar following an accident on the main Castlebar to Pontoon Road this evening.

The victim, who is in his seventies, has serious head injuries.

He was taken from his jeep by ambulance personnel around 4 p.m. when his vehicle went off the main Castlebar to Ballina road near Pontoon.

Contrary to earliet reports, there was no other vehicle involved in the accident and there was nobody else in the jeep apart from the driver.

Diversions are in place as forensic accident investigators examine the scene.

Gardaí at Castlebar (094) 90 22222 are appealing for witnesses.

The emergency services have also attended the scene of a two-car collision at Louisburgh.

The drivers of both cars have been taken to hospiital and their injuries are understood to be non-life threatening.
