Maeve Gallagher excelled at a number of sports
THE CONNAUGHT TELEGRAPH YOUNG SPORTS STARS OF THE YEAR NO. 25:
CYCLING Ireland selected Maeve Gallagher from Castlebar Cycling Club to represent Ireland at the European Youth Olympics, which were held in Gyor, Hungary, in June.
Maeve competed in four qualifying races all over Ireland to secure this selection. She won three of these races, missing out on the fourth in Kanturk, Cork, because of a crash. She is the current Irish national champion and has the outstanding record of winning every national cycling championship for the last four years.
The Swinford athlete represented Ireland earlier this year at the Youth Tour of Scotland. During this three-day event she secured a second place on stage 2 and finished seventh overall out of a field of 64 girls from all over Europe.
Maeve also won the Irish Junior Triathlete of the Year Award from Triathlon Ireland. She is the current Irish Schools Triathlon Champion, a title she won in May in Omagh representing St. Joseph's Secondary School in Castlebar.
In athletics she won two All-Ireland cross country medals at Under 17 and Under 18 in Abbottstown and Waterford, and she is the current holder of the Irish Schools All-Ireland Mile event.
