Meet renowned adventurer at GMIT Mayo event
IF you've ever had even a fleeting interest in adventure, expeditions, human challenges or are interested in the outdoor life, a special evening is coming up at GMIT Castlebar this Wednesday (February 21) at 7 p.m.
Freya Hoffmeister, the world's most renowned adventurer and solo ocean kayaker, is visiting Ireland this week and tomorrow sees her in Mayo when she presents 'Think Bigger! – Survived' - the first circumnavigation of South America at the GMIT Mayo campus.
Freya has solo circumnavigated south Island New Zealand, Australia, Iceland, South America and Ireland, not to mention the several distance and endurance races she has to her name.
She has a book written about her called Fearless - one woman, one sea kayak, one continent. A second book she wrote herself depicts her solo circumnavigation of South America, being the only person ever to have done this.
And she is not stopping there, She is currently in the process of circumnavigating North America, some 30,000 nautical miles which she estimates will take her 8 to 10 years - a feat never before attempted.
In preparation for North America as a warm up, she circumnavigated Ireland – paddling solo along our coastline, visiting some of our hidden gems and being welcomed by our famous Irish charm.
Her presentations are awe inspiring and this is a rare opportunity not to be missed. The presentation is spread over three hours and will include a 30-minute break and book signing at the end for those who wish to read about her adventures.
