Oireachtas members mark International Women's Day
OIREACHTAS members gathered today to pay tribute to the women who inspire them most.
International Women's Day (IWD) celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
From former presidents to Olympic medallists, campaigners to best friends, politicians admire many different female role models for their courage and accomplishments.
While some TDs and Senators are inspired by international activists and parliamentarians, for many, inspiration was found much closer to home.
Mayo Senator Michelle Mulherin said she was inspired by her mother Kathleen.
“My mum, Kathleen, is a strong and determined woman.
“Her priority for myself and my two sisters was that we would have as many choices in life as possible through education.
“She supported us in every way surmounting many obstacles to this end giving us opportunities she never had for herself.
“My mum epitomises an ethos of hard work and personal sacrifice to achieve a greater good with tremendous get up and go to get things done.
"I am very grateful for all she has done for me and my sisters and so proud to call her mum,” she stated.
