Mayo joins the global movement to protect our planet
ON March 24 from 8.30 and 9.30 p.m. millions of people around the planet will take part in WWF’s Earth Hour.
By turning off non-essential lights for one hour, people can demonstrate their care and concern for the environment in a collective worldwide effort.
The Earth Hour movement has been highly successful to date in demonstrating the difference that we can all make to conserve energy and reduce our carbon emissions.
Mayo County Council’s Department of Environment, Climate Change and Agriculture is getting behind this worthwhile initiative by powering down their offices and are encouraging the people of Mayo to do the same.
The council encourages everyone to start the conversation in their own homes, offices and communities and get involved by simply ensuring that all non-essential lights are powered down for that one essential hour 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 24.
Among the many Mayo venues participating in this year’s activity is Mayo Dark Skies, Ballycroy National Park, Westport Eco-Congregation, Knock Shrine and Louisburg Tidy Towns.
Those who decide to get involved can link up with all other participants around the world by logging their event on the Earth Hour website.
Events can be logged at https://www.earthhour.org/tracker and the department asks Mayo citizens to get in touch via environment@mayococo.ie to find out more information.
