Mayo apartment block evacuated after overnight fire

A TENANT of Tara Court, Saleen, Castlebar, is recovering at Mayo University Hospital from injuries sustained after a fire broke out in an apartment in the early hours of this morning.

The condition of the person has been described as comfortable.

Following the fire, eight other residents were evacuated and placed in temporary hotel accommodation in the town.

The electricity supply to the building has been cut off since last Wednesday after ESB Networks staff discovered a water leak which represented a health and safety risk, necessitating the cutting off of the power supply.

ESB Networks advised all residents to move to alternative accomodation until remedial works were carried out, but a number of tenants opted to stay.

Emergency services were called to the complex at 1 a.m. today shortly after the fire started in one apartment and the tenant, who suffered injuries, was transferred to Mayo University Hospital for treatment while all other residents were evacuated shortly afterwards.
