Bernard Dunne announces Ireland versus India boxing international for Castlebar
CASTLEBAR Boxing Club will host its first ever international tournament when an elite team of Irish boxers will face India in the TF Royal Theatre on Saturday night, May 26.
In announcing the decison to bring the international event to Castlebar, high perfomance director with the IABA and former WBA and European bantamweight champion, Bernard Dunne, said he hoped it would be the first of a number of international events which will be staged in Castlebar.
“I am very impressed with the new boxing academy at Lough Lannagh, not just the gym itself, but the facilities surrounding it. Castlebar is the ideal location to host such a major event and it can only be good for Mayo,” he said at a press briefing in Lough Lannagh Gym today.
Dunne called for as much suport as possible to ensure the tournament will be a huge success.
“Boxing is huge in Mayo and I have no doubt it will get great support and I believe we will be seeing a lot more of these major international tournaments coming to Castlebar where the faicilities are just superb, the TF Royal Theatre in particular proving to be an ideal venue for such an event,” he said.
He paid tribute to the Castlebar Boxing Club for their initiative in promoting the event and to those who had the foresight to establish the Lough Lannagh Gym as a Centre of Excellence for training eltie boxers.
