Cyclist dies during Pink Ribbon challenge
A MAN died suddenly on a charity cycle in Co. Mayo on Saturday despite the efforts of other cyclists and paramedics to save him.
The victim, named locally as Francis (Frank) Endicott, with addresses in Phibsborough, Dublin, and Newport, Co. Mayo, took ill at Ballylahan Bridge, near Foxford, while cycling the annual Pink Ribbon Challenge, an annual event to raise funds for breast cancer research.
Mr. Endicott, who was in his early sixties, was joined by his wife, Marita, for the cycle. However, she was not alongside him when he became ill.
The local Pink Ribbon committee has expressed its deepest sympathy to Marita, the couple's two daughters, Ruth and Chloe, and their extended family on their sad loss.
“Frank's death has cast a sad cloud over this year's event,” the spokesperson said.
Hundreds took part in Saturday's cycle, including former Taoiseach Enda Kenny, a keen cyclist and loyal supporter of the Pink Ribbon initiative.
To date, Mayo Pink Ribbon has raised in the region of €700,000 for breast cancer research.
As well as Phibsborough, the Endicotts had a house in Newport.
A private family funeral in Newport is planned for later this week.
