Mayo man appointed manager of Irish boxing squad to face India
SEAN Horkan will make a return to the ringside in an official capacity when he takes charge of the Irish team to face India in the first ever elite boxing international at the TF Royal Hotel Theatre on Saturday night, May 26.
Horkan, regarded as one of most sucessful Irish manager in teh sport, was in charge of the Irish team at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 when Michael Carruth won a gold medal and Wayne McCullough took home silver.
Following very favourable comments after the visit of IABA director of coaching, and former Europian and World champion, Bernard Dunnes to the Centre of Excellence gym at Lough Lannagh, Horkan fells there will be more internationals of this quality coming to Castlebar if they get a good public response to the meeting with India.
Said Sean:“To ensure another great boxing night in this famous venue I am asking for the support of all Connaught clubs in having a full attendance to assist our Irish team at the start of their training road to qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games.
“A successful week's training camp at Lough Lannagh Regional Training Camp followed by a well-attended full International will guarantee that we will be able to have more occasions when big time Irish boxing can come out of Dublin to Castlebar.
“As team manager, I am asking all boxing friends to assist me in making the training camp and the international match a huge success,” he said.
