Mayo in action at the Kennedy Cup
MAYO are in Kennedy Cup action this week with plenty of reasons for optimism.
Placed in Group 1 with Kerry, Cavan/Monaghan and Roscommon, their section – on paper at least – looks navigable.
The first group game kicks off at 4 p.m. today against Cavan/Monaghan, with two games tomorrow (Monday) against Kerry at 10.30 a.m. and Roscommon at 4 p.m. By the time those games are completed they'll know their fate.
No matter where they finish in their group there'll be knockout games to play. The quarterfinals in the various competitions (Trophy, Shield, Bowl, Plate and Cup) all take place on Wednesday, with the semi-finals on Thursday June 14 and the finals on Friday (June 15).
Add in playoff games to determine final placings and they'll be plenty of action for the week at the University of Limerick.
There's no lack of confidence in the Mayo camp anyway. “We feel we have a good squad and our aim would be to top the group. It is very doable,” said coach Amy Robinson, who's part of the management team alongside Michael Robinson (coach), Leo Heaney (coach), Alex White (coach), James Robinson (goalkeeping coach) and James O'Donnell (physio).
The Mayo squad in full is: Conor Walsh (Westport United), Chris McLellan (Castlebar Celtic), Sean Sweeney (Manulla FC), Matthew English (Manulla FC), Cillian White (Westport United), Tom O'Flaherty (Kiltimagh/Knock United), Jake Daly (Castlebar Celtic), Ben McHale (Castlebar Celtic), Aaron Tolan (Westport United), Sean Neary (Ballina Town), Conal Dawson (Westport United), Sean McDoangh (Swinford), Adam Nugent (Westport United), Cian Benson (Manulla), Rory Morris (Ballyheane) Diarmuid Coggins (Kilmurry), Paul Gilmore (Claremorris), Anto Browne (Westport United), Daniel Kelly (Westport United) and Darragh Syron (Kilmurry).
