New walkway in Kilmaine 'will help keep community active and safe'
A NEW community walkway in Kilmaine is officially opening today.
The 500-metre walkway and new lighting are located adjoining to the community grounds and have been developed following an estimated €30,000 combined investment from the Department of Rural and Community Development and Mayo County Council.
Minister Michael Ring said: “This walkway will help keep the community active and safe. It will enable people to walk and run while avoiding the busy and dangerous roadway.
“This is a vital outlet for members of the community and will prove especially useful on dark winter nights. I’m encouraged by reports I have heard that the new walkway is already extremely popular with people of all ages.
“The walkway combines perfectly with the Kilmaine community grounds around which it runs and this area is now a central hub of physical activity for the community. I commend Mayo County Council for supporting projects of this nature and I am delighted to have played my part in supporting Kilmaine’s application for funding for this amenity.”
