Claremorris Handball Club’s newly upgraded facilities officially open

Claremorris Handball Club’s newly upgraded facilities have officially opened.

The ceremony was performed yesterday by the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, in the company of Councillor Blackie Gavin, cathaoirleach, Mayo County Council.

Refurbishments included addition of separate male and female changing rooms, much- needed improvements to the court, glass back wall, new floor, new heating system and lighting and improvements to the external entrance

Minister Ring said: “When I was Minister for Tourism and Sport, I allocated Claremorris Handball Club a total of €50,000 under the 2015 round of the programme towards the refurbishment of this Handball Alley. You can see at first hand the benefit this has brought to this wonderful facility.

“This facility will provide a valuable resource that serves both the surrounding community and many visitors that come to this area. Handball is a fast paced, highly skilful, hugely entertaining, and fully inclusive sport.

“The fitness benefits of the game are vast and I am a big believer that sport in people’s lives is essential for a healthy and happy existence.

“There is a great tradition of handball in the town. Claremorris Handball Club, which was formed in 1975, has achieved many All Ireland titles and awards. The club has received great feedback about the upgraded facility especially from GAA Handball Ireland, having already hosted part of the National She’s Ace competition in January 2018.

”My portfolio as Minister for Rural and Community Development has given me the opportunity to engage with people around the country and to see the wonderful results of the work of many local communities big and small.

“I believe that together we will continue to develop Ireland at a regional and local level with the financial support of the schemes managed by my department and outlined in the Action Plan for Rural Development to help local communities and rural areas.

“I wish all involved every success with this development and to encourage the people of Claremorris to make use of this facility when completed.

“I wish the best of luck to the players travelling to the Handball World Championships in Minnesota.”
