Mayo handball star seals world title in Minnesota
A TALENTED Mayo handball star has captured a gold medal at the World Handball Championships in Minnesota.
Patrick Murphy, Claremorris, partnered by Tipperary's James Prentace, emerged winners in the 19 and Under Wallball Doubles final at the event.
It is the first time the south Mayo club has captured such a prestigious title and a big homecoming is planned for Patrick on his return.
It's been a busy period for the club as its new alley was officially opened by Minister Michael Ring earlier this month.
In a statement this evening, Minister Ring extended his congratulations to Patrick and James on such a memorable and historic triumph.
"It's simply brilliant for the sport," he added.
