Castlebar: The neglect of a county town
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Sir,
SOME weeks ago I wrote to the Letters To The Editor page of The Connaught Telegraph complaining about the way the town of Castlebar is being neglected.
I received a big response to my letter and to my talk with Aidan Crowley on CRC FM.
I was delighted to see that the seats on Market Square have been repaired, and also that the stream at Marian Row has been cleaned up.
Could I suggest that further works need to be carried out to:
1) The sides of the said stream on Marian Row, which are crumbling and need to be re-concreted.
2) The town river, which needs to be cleaned of vegetation badly.
3) The flag stones at the Market Square (it has been quoted that it would cost €10,000 to repair them, but I disagree – I would suggest that two men with shovels and a few bags of fine sand could repair the place in a few hours);
4) The road markings in the town, which are in a bad state (I wonder is the quality of the road marking paint being used up to standard? I was recently in the UK and noticed the high quality road marking on the streets and roads – it is far better than what we have here);
5) The road signs around the town, which in places are obliterated by bushes that need to be cut, and the grass margins need cutting too; and 6) green spaces, which could be cared for by local effort, with some flowers set maybe.
I am not condemning everything, and I compliment those who are caring for their areas. But as a town, and officials, we could do a lot more for our town.
Yours sincerely,
Aidan T. Brett,
Garryduff,
Castlebar.
