Carnacon successful in Ladies GAA expulsion appeal

CARNACON Ladies GAA Club has won its appeal against the controversial decision by the Mayo Ladies County Board to banish them from the 2018 league and championship series for withdrawing players from the county senior squad. 

The breaking news of the ruling by the Connaught Ladies GAA appeal committee. sitting in Bekan tonight, has been widely welcomed across the GAA community.

And local Councillor Cyril Burke said the decision was good for the sport and wished the club every success in their defence of the All-Ireland Club SFC title.  

The Mayo Ladies County Board ban had been imposed under rule 288 which related to bringing the game into disrepute during the saga over some of their team members pulling out of the county senior panel last month.

It meant that they would be unable to defend their county, Connaught and All-Ireland senior club titles.

The action taken by the Mayo Ladies County Board against the Carnacon club had not been received well by GAA enthusiasts throughout the county who will now be delighted that a wrong has been put right. 

Tonight's appeal by the Mayo renowned ladies club was heard by the Connaught Ladies GAA appeals committee which heard submissions from both sides and, following a thorough hearing, it was ruled the ban on the Carnacon was incorrect and the club was reinstated to senior competitions forthwith.

This result means that Carnacon can now focus back on the Mayo championship as well as finishing out their league campaign.

A full statement is expected to be issued by the club in the morning.

The Mayo County Ladies GAA Board is unlikely to appeal to Croke Park.
