Seven up for Jason as Burrishoole book county final spot
Burrishoole ............... 1-15
The Neale ................. 0-14
MAYO ace Jason Doherty registered seven points as Burrishoole proved too strong for The Neale's in the west Mayo side's victory in the semi-final of the Mayo intermediate championship at Elverys MacHale, Castlebar, today.
In the opening half both sides had their periods of dominance.
The Neale looked to be in good shape after 23 minutes as they held a two-point lead despite playing into a strong wind.
However, two points from Doherty and one each from Paddy Mulchrone and Alan Ryder turned things around for Burrishoole before the half ended and, as a resul,t it was they who had a two-point advantage as the sides went in for the interval break.
On the resumption both sides exchanged points on four occasions to still leave just two between them as the game entered the final quarter.
But the crucial score of the half and indeed the game arrived in the 47th minute when centre-back Paddy Mulchrone drove upfield and, after receiving a pass from Fintan McManamon, hit a thundering low drive to the back of the net.
From this stage onwards the Newport men kept their opponents at bay and ran out the deserving winners by four points in the end.
