Mayo garda alert over WhatsApp hackers

AN alert has been issued by gardaì in Mayo over a scam involving WhatsApp account hackers.

A garda spokesman confirmed hackers are targeting accounts via voicemail inboxes.

He stated: "They first attempt to download and verify the app by using the victim's phone number.

"By carrying out the attack at night, they bank on the user not checking their phones and take advantage of the WhatsApp six-digit verification code.

"After getting this code the scammers can log onto the user's account."

Hundreds of groups and organisations throughout Mayo operate private WhatsApp accounts to keep members updated on activities.
