Councillor slams Enniscrone as ‘deplorable’ venue for big GAA game

A MEMBER of Mayo County Council has given Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA Club, Co. Sligo, a very poor rating following the Connaught club championship game between Ballintubber and Tourlestrane earlier this month.

Councillor Al McDonnell, a supporter of Ballintubber, travelled to the seaside venue for the game which his team won on a scoreline of six points to five.

To say he was less than impressed would be an understatement.

“Conditions all round were quite deplorable,” he told a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District. "No way was the venue able to accommodate a couple of thousand people. There was very little parking.”

The Fianna Fail councillor also hit out at changing room conditions for the players as well as accommodation for spectators.

Councillor Cyril Burke supported a proposal from Councillor McDonnell that Castlebar Municipal District write to the Connaught GAA Council expressing dissatisfaction with the selection of the venue for such an important GAA fixture.

Councillor Joe McHale said that Ballina Stephenites would be a much more suitable venue for the match.

Members unanimously agreed that a letter should be drafted and sent to the Connaught GAA Council.
