Gardaí in Mayo probe case of alleged sexual assault

GARDAÍ in Mayo are investigating an alleged serious sexual assault which took place in Castlebar in the early hours of this morning.

The victim - a female in her 20s - made the complaint to gardaí following the alleged attack which occurred at a location close to the town centre.

She had been attending a social event in Castlebar earlier in the night.

After making her complaint, she was interviewed by garda personnel before being transferred to the Sexual Assualt Treatment Union in Galway.

An area of ground was sealed off in Castlebar for a number of hours today in order for a forensic examination to be undertaken.

No arrest has been made but the gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry.
