Mayo beach has been taken away again by the Atlantic Ocean

ACHILL'S Dooagh Beach, the beach that miraculously returned in April 2017 after being lost for 33 years has once again been taken away by the Atlantic.

Over the course of 10 days in April 2017, Dooagh Beach on Achill Island which had been washed away during the winter of 1984/1985, miraculously returned .

Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sand were deposited back on the shoreline. The phenomenon made worldwide headlines and brought TV crews from UK, France, Germany, Netherlands and the USA to the remote Irish village.

Over the course of the following few months, Achill Island received a significant tourism boost.

Visitors to the island increased by 70% and 79 part time or full time jobs were created in the area.

This winter has seen the Irish coast hit by some strong storms and locals noticed that the sand levels had been gradually eroding.

During the past month, some heavy seas have once again been pounding the Achill shoreline and have resulted in almost all of the sand being washed away and replaced by large boulders.

Sean Molloy, manager of AchillTourism.com, filmed the original video featuring his wife Etain and their two dogs, Scrambler and Buddy, back in 2017 of the newly returned beach.

He recreated the same scene this week and the difference is absolutely amazing. The beautiful golden sands have all but been completely washed away, as pictured.

Sean though remains upbeat about the loss of the beach. “Fortunately, we are not short of beaches here on Achill and have 5 other Blue Flag beaches.

"We are located on the Wild Atlantic Way and this just shows the awesome power of nature in its full glory. We knew that at some point our gorgeous beach would be washed away again, but we had hoped to have had it for a little longer”
