Battling Mayo lose out to Cavan/Monaghan
Mayo lost out on back-to-back national titles as they were beaten 2-1 by Cavan/Monaghan in today's SFAI Subway Under 13 Inter-League Championship final.
Champions last year at Under 12 level, Mayo entered the final - played at Gainstown, Mullingar - in confident mood but came up against a strong Ulster outfit.
Mayo dominated the first half but didn't score and were then caught with two goals in quick succession by Cavan/Monaghan. The goals conceded were disappointing from Mayo's point of view, coming from a close-range finish after a free and a shot swung at from the edge of the box that found its way to the bottom corner.
There was fight in the Mayo boys, however, and a late Gavin Forry strike gave them some hope. Even with time running out they maintained pressure on their opponents' goal, but Cavan/Monaghan held on to claim victory and hoist the Liam Miller Cup as national Under 13 SFAI Subway Inter-League champions for 2018/19.
