Young Sports Stars of the Year Award winner No. 6: Pat Lambert
April also saw joint winners in our Young Sports Stars of the Year Awards, albeit in different sports – Gaelic football and rugby.
First up is Pat Lambert, who featured prominently in Westport school Rice College's great run in the All-Ireland senior A colleges Gaelic football competition, in which they lost out narrowly to Ulster champions St. Ronan’s in the final.
An impressive win over St. Jarlath's in the semi-final saw them advance to a provincial final meeting with holders and favourites, St. Attracta's of Tubbercurry, but the Westport school produced a magnificent performance to win their first ever Connaught senior A title.
Naas CBS were their opponents in the All-Ireland semi-final and again the Connaught champions delivered a winning performance.
In the All-Ireland final they stood tall against St. Ronan's team from Armagh in a game that finished 1-10 to 1-9 in favour of the Ulster side.
Rice College had many fine players and leaders but we that felt Pat Lambert was their most consistent performer right throughout a tough campaign.
