Young Sports Stars of the Year Award winner No. 13: Jason Murphy
The second August winner in our Young Sports Stars of the Year Awards was motorsport talent Jason Murphy.
His standout moment of 2018 arrived as he became the first Mayo person ever to win back-to-back national motorsport titles, claiming the J1000 Valvoline Irish Forestry Championship crown in August.
Jason and his Peugeot 107, ably guided by his uncle Matthew in the navigator's seat, were on course to make history at the final event of the championships - for 15- to 19-year-olds - in Cork in August and despite ending up off the road and stuck in a drain on day one, they recovered to score valuable championship points.
On day two the young south Mayo driver showed his title intentions as he completely dominated the second leg, setting fastest times on five out of the six stages to wrap up the 2018 Motorsport Ireland Irish Forestry Championship and make history by securing back-to-back national J1000 wins.
