Young Sports Stars of the Year Award winner No. 29: St. Louis CS
We move now to the Teams of the Year in our look at the Young Sports Stars of the Year Award winners.
First up is St. Louis Community School, Kiltimagh, who are being awarded the Eric O'Reilly Memorial Cup as soccer team of the year.
The boys of St. Louis followed up county and provincial post-primary FAI first year futsal success with the ultimate prize, the national title, in early December.
After working their way through a tough Mayo group, St. Louis secured top spot at the Connaught futsal finals in IT Sligo with two wins and two draws from four games, leaving them top of the pile when all the other results were factored in.
That saw them through to the national final in the Waterford IT sports arena on December 4 where, battle-hardened by the provincial qualifier, St. Louis won their first two games - against Mercy Secondary School, Mounthawk, Tralee, and St. Columba’s College, Stranorlar, Donegal - and in so doing claimed the title by virtue of the tiebreaker permutations.
The final game agianst St. Mary’s Diocesan School, Drogheda, Co. Louth, ended in a 2-2 draw but that didn't matter as the boys from St. Louis had already secured the honours.
Their exploits in Mayo, Connaught and at national level leave them deserving Eric O'Reilly Memorial Cup winners for 2018.
