Call for 'bypass strategy' to protect Mayo town centre

A CALL has been issued for a strategy to protect Castlebar town centre after the planned €170m. Turlough to Westport N5 upgrade is completed.

The new road, work on which is due to start in September, will bypass the county town.

Now local independent candidate Harry Barrett wants Mayo County Council to commission a study in order to put a masterplan in place to secure the future of the town centre.

Barrett added the study also needs to establish the kind of development that will be permitted along the route.
