Castlebar nurse receives OBE
CASTLEBAR nurse, Professor Brian Dolan, received an OBE - Office of the Order of the British Empire - from the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, at Buckingham Palace on May 2 after being included in the Queen’s UK’s 2019 New Year’s Honours List, writes Tom Gillespie.
Professor Dolan, originally from Riverdale Court, and son of Billy Dolan (Holyhill) and Chrissie Dolan (nee Redmond, Spencer Street), and brother of Barry Dolan and Denise Foy, Castlebar, and Marian Canning, London, was awarded the honour for ‘services to nursing and emergency care’.
Professor Dolan, who is visiting professor of nursing to Oxford Institute of Nursing, Midwifery and Health and director of Health Services 360, Stratford-on-Avon, did his nursing training in St. Mary’s Hospital, Castlebar.
He said: "My career started at St. Mary’s and I’m very proud to tell people that in New Zealand, Australia and the UK where I work."
Professor Dolan, who has written and/or edited seven nursing books, also leads a global social movement, recently adopted in Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar, called #EndPJparalysis, to encourage patients to get up, dressed and moving while in hospital in order to reduce the risk of falls, pressure ulcers and even the length of time they spend in hospital.
